Originally built in 1891 as the Rotherwood stone farmhouse, the Highlands Ranch Mansion sits on 250 acres, with a 50-acre Historic Park open to the public from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily unless closed for a private event. Free historic tours run on a rotating schedule, most commonly Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the grounds host community events throughout the year, including the annual Holiday Celebration at the Mansion each December.
A short drive from Highlands Ranch, this Scottish-style castle sits on more than 3,000 acres of foothills between Sedalia and Highlands Ranch. 2026 marks the castle's 100th anniversary, with a full season of guided 90-minute castle tours, afternoon tea, concerts, and guided hikes running from May through October, plus elk-bugling season viewings in September. Real estate aggregators list this as a day-trip favorite for anyone considering the Highlands Ranch to Sedalia corridor.
The Backcountry is a privately managed conservation property owned by the Highlands Ranch Community Association, commonly described as one of the largest of its kind in the Denver metro area. Starting in June 2026, a bison herd with roots in the historic Daniels Park population moved into a newly prepared 200-acre pasture inside the Backcountry, a joint conservation project between the Backcountry Wilderness Area Fund, Denver Mountain Parks, and the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance. HRCA has also indicated UTV tours and educational programs tied to the herd are coming, though specific dates hadn't been announced as of this writing. Beyond the bison, the property offers guided horseback rides, archery, environmental education, and more than 25 miles of trails.
Just north of Cherokee Ranch, Daniels Park has hosted a historic bison herd since 1938 and offers sweeping views back toward the Front Range along with picnic areas and hiking trails. Together with the Backcountry and Cherokee Ranch, it forms roughly 12,000 contiguous acres of protected open space stretching from Highlands Ranch to Sedalia, making this corridor one of the largest connected conservation areas near Denver.
Civic Green Park anchors Town Center with an amphitheater, interactive fountains, a playground, and a splash pad, and it's the community's default venue for outdoor concerts and seasonal festivals. Its location next to the library and Town Center shops makes it easy to combine with a shopping or dining stop.
Paintbrush Park covers baseball fields, tennis courts, and trail connections into the broader Highlands Ranch trail network, spanning more than 70 miles community-wide. Redstone Park adds a skate park, soccer fields, tennis courts, and a fishing pond, making both parks regular weekend destinations for organized sports and casual outdoor time alike.
Four HRCA recreation centers serve the community, each with a different focus. Northridge, the original center near Broadway and Highlands Ranch Parkway, has racquetball and indoor tennis courts. Eastridge features large indoor and outdoor pools with a water slide. Southridge leans family-friendly with a lazy river and zero-depth activity pool, and doubles as the farmers market's winter indoor location. Westridge is geared toward team sports and training, with a bicycle studio, indoor turf, and batting cages.
Town Center mixes local boutiques, national retailers, and a range of restaurants along Highlands Ranch Parkway. For a curated list of where to eat, see our roundup of the best restaurants in Highlands Ranch and our guide to pet-friendly restaurants if you're bringing the dog along.
The Town Center farmers market runs every Sunday from April 5 through November 1, 2026, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (or sellout), along Highlands Ranch Parkway between Lucent and Broadway. Shoppers can find Colorado produce, baked goods, and live music, with the market moving indoors to Southridge Recreation Center during the winter off-season.
The Highlands Ranch Mansion, the Backcountry Wilderness Area (now home to a returning bison herd), Cherokee Ranch and Castle nearby in Sedalia, and the Town Center's shops, restaurants, and weekly farmers market are the area's top draws for both residents and visitors.
Both. Amenities like the recreation centers and neighborhood parks are reserved for HRCA residents, but the Mansion grounds, Backcountry trails, Daniels Park, Cherokee Ranch, and Town Center are open to the public, making it a worthwhile stop for visitors exploring south Denver.
